Becoming a registered midwife

Registered midwives provide care for women and their families through the cycle of pregnancy and birth.

To become a Registered Midwife you will need to complete a Bachelor of Midwifery.

There are several options in gaining your degree:

  • Study Bachelor of Midwifery full-time as an undergraduate for 3 years; complete your Bachelor of Nursing and then enrol in a postgraduate qualification in midwifery, or
  • Complete a undergraduate double degree in midwifery and nursing for 4 years full-time.

You need a midwifery qualification and a licence from the Queensland Nursing Council (QNC) to practise midwifery in Queensland. Once you have completed your midwifery degree you will need to apply to the QNC for registration and a current licence to practice. For more information on midwifery registration and regulation in Queensland go to the Queensland Nursing Council website.
