Graduate placement & entry

Positions in Queensland for new nursing graduates are available either with Queensland Health or with private hospitals across the State.

Queensland Health

For graduates seeking a position with Queensland Health, there is a centralised online recruitment system for submitting applications. All applications for graduate nurse positions in Queensland Health facilities must be submitted via this online system.

For more information about graduate programs and to access the online application system, go to Queensland Health website.

Private hospitals

Applications for graduate nurse positions with private hospitals will need to be submitted via that hospital's graduate nurse application process. If you are unsure - contact the hospital concerned to inquire.

The Queensland Health online application system opens twice per year to receive applications:

  • In August to receive applications for 'start-of-year' programs

  • In March to receive applications for 'mid-year' programs

To be eligible to apply for a graduate nurse program you must have recently completed, or are about to complete, an undergraduate degree in nursing (pre-registration) or equivalent; leading to registration with the Queensland Nursing Council.

Selection criteria

When you apply for graduate nurse positions with a Government organisation you will be required to address a number of key selection criteria related directly to the job you are applying for. The selection criteria cover a range of aspects important to the job. These include the skills, qualifications, aptitudes, abilities, experience and personal attributes necessary to perform the job you are applying for. Short-listing for interviews is generally based on how well your application addressed the selection criteria, so it is very important to clearly demonstrate how you are able to meet each criterion. Please refer to some basic guidelines on how to address selection criteria.

Selection interview

The primary purpose of an interview is to provide the interviewer(s) with the opportunity to meet you and to determine your suitability for the position and work environment. Although each hospital and health care facility has its own interviewing techniques, generally the interview questions may cover areas such as:

  • a relevant clinical scenario;
  • the role of a registered nurse in a multi-disciplinary team;
  • how to undertake research or quality improvement activities;
  • the scope of practice and professional standards as set down by the Queensland Nursing Council;
  • the nursing code of conduct, as set down by the Queensland Nursing Council and;
  • workplace health and safety issues, specific to the setting in which you will work.
