Becoming an endorsed midwife
Endorsed midwives provide care for women and their families through the cycle of pregnancy, birth and early parenting.
To become a endorsed Midwife you will need to complete a Bachelor of Midwifery.
There are several options in gaining your qualification:
- Study Bachelor of Midwifery full-time as an undergraduate for 3 years;
- Complete a Bachelor of Nursing and then enrol in a postgraduate diploma in midwifery, or
- Complete an undergraduate double degree in midwifery and nursing for 4 years full-time.
You need a midwifery qualification and a licence from the Queensland Nursing Council (QNC) to practise midwifery in Queensland. Once you have completed your midwifery education you will need to apply to the QNC for registration and a current licence to practice. Educational Prequisites
To become a registered midwife you must complete an approved education program in midwifery. Entry generally requires completion of Year 12 with passes in English and Biology. A first aid certificate may also be required at some universities.
Alternative entry may be available for mature aged students or enrolled nurses allowing the formal prerequisites to be waivered. You may also be able to study externally through distance education. As subjects and entry requirements can vary between institutions, you should contact your chosen university for full details.
What Will I Study?
Studying to become an endorsed midwife involves a mix of practical and theoretical training. You will cover areas such as pregnancy and birth, biology, pharmacology, personal and professional issues,. Other subjects may include clinical assessment, pathophysiology, health law and health promotion.
