What do Domiciliary Nurses do?
Nurses who work in the domiciliary setting have a vast array of nursing skills, providing the ultimate in holistic care. They work closely with the client, their families, friends and health care team to ensure an effective package of care is delivered. Health education is a critical element of domiciliary care as nurses need to ensure clients have accurate, easy to understand information to assist in making informed decisions about their health. Domiciliary nurses need generalist nursing skills to provide care for not only a wide variety of clients, but also for different health condition.

There are also speciality areas within the domiciliary setting, including:

  • Diabetes care
  • HIV/AIDS care
  • Continence Management
  • Palliative care
  • Stomal therapy
  • Lymphoedema management
  • Mental health care
  • Alcohol and Drug services
  • Sexual health care
  • Health Promotion
  • Midwifery
  • Health education
  • Health assessments
  • Immunisation

The goal of nursing care in the domiciliary setting is to provide quality nursing care to clients in their preferred environment, thus reducing premature admission to an institutional environment, such as an aged care facility or hospital.
