Day surgery nursing
Day surgery nurses care for patients undergoing a surgical procedure and return home on the same day. A day surgery nurse is highly motivated and skilled in areas of care ranging from paediatrics (children) to geriatrics (aged care). They possess learning and teaching skills which can be applied to all age groups, they have sound business, public relations and marketing skills, and they ultimately maintain a caring insight into planning, identifying, assessing and evaluating real and potential problems.
What does a day surgery nurse do?
Patients will be prepared and briefed by their day surgery nurse when they arrive for their procedure. The nurse will attend the procedure and assist the surgeon, and will then care for the patient during their recovery, providing them with information on how best to look after themselves when they return home.
How do I become a day surgery nurse?
Day surgery can be divided into single or multiple specialties and procedures, so a registered nurse can pursue further study in any specialty area of their choice, but requires no formal, post-graduate training in day surgery nursing. For more information on post-graduate course availability in this area, click here to go to the further education section.
Enrolled nurses can also develop roles in the day surgery setting, over all areas of their competencies.
