Once you have registered or enrolled as a nurse, there are unlimited opportunities that exist within nursing and midwifery to specialise and expand your career with further study. Graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, masters degrees and higher degrees by research are all available in a wide range of fields within nursing in Queensland.
Registered Nurse
For registered nurses there are a vast range of opportunities for further study within nursing. There are numerous courses available for registered nurses wanting to undertake further study, in a range of nursing specialties and to varying levels of education. These courses may also be available by distance education. Please contact universities directly to obtain further information.
If you are a hospital-trained registered nurse and would like to upgrade your qualifications to a bachelor's degree, you will be given credits for prior learning that will reduce the length of required study. The Bachelor of Nursing (post registration) is available for hospital-trained registered nurses in Queensland at the following universities:

- Central Queensland University - Rockhampton
- Griffith University - Gold Coast, Mt Gravatt, Nathan, Logan
- James Cook University - Townsville
- Queensland University of Technology - Kelvin Grove (Brisbane)

Registered Midwife
For registered midwives there are opportunities for further study within midwifery. You can undertake you Master of Midwifery at the following Universities:

Enrolled Nurses
There are many diverse career opportunities for Enrolled Nurses in Queensland. In Queensland, Enrolled Nurses are a valuable and respected member of the health care team. Their scope of practice can range from direct patient care, nurse informatics, nursing research, team leader duties, education and management. In this exciting environment the opportunities for Enrolled Nurses keeps expanding.
For enrolled nurses wanting to undertake further study at TAFE, the following options are available:
- Diploma of Nursing (Post-Enrolment)
- Medication Practice for Enrolled Nurses (Post-Enrolment)
Enrolled Nurse can become Registered Nurses, by applying through Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) for pre-registration Bachelor of Nursing courses.
