Higher Education Contribution Scheme
Most Australian students must contribute to the cost of their higher education through the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS). Fees can either be paid up front (with a 25 percent discount), or you can defer all or part of your repayments until your income reaches a certain level and then begin repaying through the taxation system. Find out more from the HECS-HELP website
Postgraduate Education Loans Scheme
The Postgraduate Education Loans Scheme (PELS) is an interest free loan provided by the Commonwealth Government. It is available to students enrolled in postgraduate, fee-paying, non-research courses. The Government pays the student's university directly, and the loan is repaid via the taxation system when the student's income reaches $23,242. For more information visit the PELS website.
